Kumasi Technical University (KsTU) organised a public lecture aimed at addressing environmental concerns affecting Ghanaians and are likely to affect its future generation. The event, organised by the Institute of Research, Innovation and Development (IRID), assembled professionals and stakeholders who are committed to safeguard the environment.
The keynote address was delivered by Hon. Dr. Henry Kwabena Kokofu (Esq.), President’s Special Envoy for Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF) and former Chief Executive Officer of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Dr. Kokofu emphasised the importance of integrating indigenous methods and practices into Ghana's climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies. He highlighted the historical effectiveness of traditional methods in environmental protection, urging a return to such practices.
Dr. Kokofu outlined several recommendations to deal with climate change, including reducing deforestation, promoting renewable energy, advocating for sustainable production and consumption as well as improving waste management practices. He issued a stern warning about the potential consequences of illegal mining activities on Ghana's cocoa industry, emphasising the urgent need for concerted action to safeguard the sector.
Expressing deep concern about rising pollution levels in Ghana, Dr. Kokofu underscored the role of human activities in exacerbating environmental risks. He called for collaborative efforts to address these challenges and protect the environment for future generation.

The lecture which was held at the New Great Hall of KsTU, marked the commencement of activities leading to IRID week 2024. During the event, Prof. Smart Sarpong, Director of IRID presented a citation to Dr. Kokofu, commending him for his insightful discourse.
In addition, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Ing. Prof. Abena Obiri-Yeboah who represented the Vice-Chancellor, emphasised the importance of personal environmental responsibility, urging attendees to prioritise their well-being.
The public lecture served as a crucial platform for dialogue and action on environmental protection, reflecting KsTU's commitment to sustainable development and innovation.
